Description:
We begin today's news in Iraq where Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has rejected calls for senior politicians to resign over a stampede that killed more than 950 Shiite worshippers. The incident was sparked by rumors that a suicide bomber was among the religious pilgrims, provoking a panicked rush. Iraq's Health Minister, who is Shiite, blamed the interior and defense ministers. al-Jaafari, however, stood behind his cabinet, saying both ministries made adequate security preparations for the religious event. The prime minister hopes to avoid fueling sectarian tensions further. He promised to hold an inquiry into the disaster.A series of bombs have rocked southern Thailand. Government officials believe militants from the country's Muslim minority are responsible. Authorities urged calm after the attacks that claimed 3 victims and saw dozens more injured. Amid the escalating violence, more than 130 Muslim villagers abandoned their homes to seek refuge across the nearby border in Malaysia. They claim Thai government soldiers had murdered their leader during reprisal raids. Malaysian forces responded by tightening border security at the narrow river that separates the two nations. Nearly 900 people have died since the beginning of last year in the ongoing conflict between Thai troops and Muslim separatists. The French government is shutting down unsafe housing in Paris. The move comes after two lethal tenement fires killed dozens of African immigrants. Municipal authorities have identified over 420 dilapidated flats around the capital. Firefighters will be investigating such units and installing fire alarms if they are necessary. As the inspections are carried out immigrants in squats and other dangerous buildings will be relocated. President Jacques Chirac called on his government to build more social housing. He added that the current situation is an unworthy reception for people coming to France regardless of their origins or nationality.According to a US study, India is the top arms buyer among developing nations. The non-partisan Congressional Research Service report covers the sale of tanks, submarines, combat aircraft, missiles and ammunition. It claims India ordered $5.7 billion dollars US in conventional weapons last year alone. That puts them ahead of both China and Saudi Arabia. The US remains the largest supplier, with Russia ranking second. Experts believe America's willingness to sell advanced military items to India shows Washington views Delhi as a counterweight to China's growing military strength in the region.Historic talks have begun between Israel and Pakistan. With no formal diplomatic ties, it marks the first high-level contact between the two countries. Foreign ministers made initial contact at a meeting in Turkey. Islamabad strongly supports the creation of a Palestinian state and has consistently demanded Israel withdraw from the occupied territories. Analysts believe there is now room for hope since the talks came after Israel pulled out of Gaza. Another sign of improving ties are reports that Jordan's King Abdullah is considering a direct meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. And in today's final story, a new report says the war in Iraq has become more expensive than the Vietnam conflict. The conservative American Enterprise Institute claims Iraq is costing the US $5.6 billion dollars a month while Vietnam was $5.1 billion dollars over the same period. The report goes on to say that so far, Iraq is costing $277 dollars for every single person in the US. However, US government officials point out the relative cost of operations in Iraq is about 2% of America's annual gross domestic product. That's less than either the Vietnam conflict at 12% or World War Two at a whopping 40%.
